Connecticut’s Credit Unions has named Mutual Security Credit Union and member Brandon recipients of the inaugural 2026 Member Impact Award, recognizing an extraordinary member journey that demonstrates the life-changing impact a credit union can have when financial education, responsible lending and personal support come together.

The award was presented during the 2026 Connecticut’s Credit Unions Momentum Awards Ceremony.

The Member Impact Award is a new honor recognizing a credit union initiative or member outcome that has measurably improved financial well-being through areas such as savings, debt reduction, credit improvement, homeownership, financial counseling, and expanded access to responsible financial services.

Brandon’s story began when he came to Mutual Security Credit Union with an auto loan at a 24% interest rate. Although he made his payments, the loan's high cost made it difficult for his family to make meaningful financial progress. Rather than simply declining an immediate refinance, Mutual Security worked with Brandon to create a path forward.

Brandon committed to Mutual Security’s Financial Independence Training, or FIT, Program, spending about six months improving his financial position and following the credit union's guidance. When the time was right, Mutual Security refinanced his vehicle loan, reducing his monthly payment by several hundred dollars. The credit union then encouraged Brandon to redirect those savings into an automatic payroll deduction rather than allowing the money to disappear into everyday expenses.

That decision turned monthly savings into a long-term opportunity.
Over time, Brandon saved enough for a down payment on his family’s first home, and Mutual Security helped him take the next step by providing the family’s mortgage. His journey had progressed from high-cost debt, to financial education, to more affordable credit, to consistent savings and ultimately first-time homeownership.

And the story did not end there.

Most recently, Mutual Security provided Brandon’s family with a small-business loan, helping support their next chapter as entrepreneurs. Today, the family operates Cousins Cafe & Deli in Wallingford, Connecticut.

“Brandon’s story captures exactly why we created the Member Impact Award,” said Christopher Whalen, VP of Marketing and Strategic Solutions for Connecticut’s Credit Unions. “This isn’t a story about one transaction or one loan. It is about a credit union building a relationship with a member, meeting him where he was, and helping create a pathway from financial challenges to financial success.”

“This award is especially meaningful because it represents what credit unions are all about: helping people build better financial futures. Brandon did the hard work, and we were honored to partner with him along the way. His journey from a high-interest auto loan to homeownership and a family business is a wonderful example of ‘People Helping People’ in action,” said Hank Baum, President and CEO, Mutual Security Credit Union.

Brandon’s experience has also become a reminder that financial challenges do not have to define a member’s future.

“Sometimes member impact begins with saying yes,” Mutual Security wrote in its award submission. “Other times, it begins by saying: ‘Not yet, but we’ll help you get there.’”

From a 24% auto loan to a first home and now a family business, Brandon’s journey shows the long-term difference a credit union can make when it looks beyond a member’s financial circumstances today and helps them build toward what comes next.
