Credit Union Donates Books to Area Students

Every child who learns to love reading before first grade opens a door to confidence, imagination, and a lifetime of learning.

While reading may be fundamental, it’s not always accessible. The Team at UBI Federal Credit Union wanted to help create a greater resource for area kindergarteners by donating the Natasha Wing book “The Night Before First Grade” book to every kindergartener in Plainville and Bristol, about 850 books.

Ed Bohnwagner, President/CEO of UBI Federal Credit Union, said, “According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, being read to at least three times a week while in kindergarten and being proficient at recognizing numbers and relative size at kindergarten entry also relate to children's spring kindergarten and first grade reading achievement. We want to give every kindergarten student the best opportunity for success.”

The Kindergarten Class at Immanuel Lutheran School in Bristol said “Thank you for sharing your love of books with us. We read the book as a class. It was a good book! We were so happy to bring a book home with us. You were so kind to share with us.”

Fred Brown, VP of Marketing said “We chose The Night Before First Grade because it helps children feel excited and confident about starting a brand-new school year. The story captures many of the emotions kindergarteners experience as they prepare for first grade, while showing that new adventures can be fun and rewarding. Its playful rhymes, colorful illustrations, and positive message make it a perfect book to encourage young readers and help families celebrate this important milestone. The author, Natasha Wing was very happy to hear we were distributing her book to so many students.”

Iris White, the Bristol Public Schools Superintendent said “The books you provided will help inspire our students to develop a love of reading. Your contribution is a wonderful example of how local businesses can make a positive and lasting impact. We look forward to continuing our partnership as we work together to provide valuable educational opportunities in Bristol.”
